OH MY GOD, I HAVE FOUND THE BEST PICTURE EVAH!

It's going to be made into my next icon, TRUFAX!

Sorry if I potentially offended anyone with it, but I think it's adorable and I'm all for the over 'hit over the head with the moe=hammer Hitler'. I in no way support what Hitler did, but I would not be Nia without all of the random hitler jokes that I toss at everyone. (Which is probably why I enjoyed "The Producers" so much)

How not to cross genres

[info]branchandroot
Genre crossing, when done well, can be a very effective storytelling technique, allowing the author to hit the reader with unexpected plot turns and presentation that is sufficiently unusual that it will make the reader think twice about the scene. Alas, when not done well all we get is a hot mess.

Amano is currently demonstrating Not Well with Katekyou Hitman Reborn.

This is especially a shame considering that her first cross went off very well. When she had written sixty issues of a gag manga, full of underwear shenanigans, and suddenly decided she wanted to write a serious, indeed dark in places, battle manga, she made the transition quite smoothly. The underwear phased out and was replaced in a plausible way, the change presented as a moment of personal development for our main character, such as we might expect in a good battle manga. The initial premise, that our hero is slated to inherit a mafia family, offered plenty of material for a darker turn. So far so good. The next two and a half arcs were a marvelous sweep of fast-paced action with personal development and growth for the whole ensemble of characters.

And then we hit the bump. Possibly even the shark. Somewhere, for some reason, the decision was made to extend the Future arc with a new set of villains, and the storytelling fell apart. The pace jinked and faltered, new characters got no background or development, the fights were truncated and disappointing compared to the intense confrontations of previous arcs, and even the first half of the Future arc.

Worst of all, Amano turned back to the gag genre, and, at this juncture, failed to make it work.

This is most evident in our hero, Tsuna. Tsuna has always flailed a lot, to be sure, but less so as time went on; indeed, when he came to the future, the pressure of events and responsibility seemed to wash the flailing out of him and push him toward a more mature presentation even when he isn't wrapped up in Dying Will. With this latest turn, however, the flailing is suddenly back to early levels, to the extent that his weapon reflects it and allies comment on it. The plot provides us with no explanation for this.

This is characteristic of the gag genre: character development is neither necessary nor, in most cases, desired. The character quirks that are used for gags must remain constant, and the nature of the genre is such that readers are usually willing to suspend any disbelief and accept them, however implausible. It's part of the genre expectations.

The genre expectation of a battle manga, and especially a serious one, is that characters will develop, both technically and emotionally. Sudden backsliding of personal development needs some kind of cause or explanation.

As I said at the beginning, these expectations can be crossed, if it is done well. Many battle manga use brief gag moments to break tension; bathroom humor is a favorite. Even the development of the hero can be let to fail briefly, for the sake of increasing dramatic tension. But if the audience is not to reject that tactic, it must be framed, supported, explained in some way--it must be presented as a dramatic moment, in order to be accepted as such. Tsuna's reversion is not.

Hence my fear that Amano has no clue where she's going with the current sub-arc and has fallen back on her roots because she is at a complete loss. If this is due to editorial pressure, to draw out the Future arc more, I hope someone kicks that editor in the teeth soon. If it is due to Amano losing her grip on the story, paging editor!Reborn, please. In either case, the current issues are a fine example of how not to do it.

Does anyone know where I'm going to be on March 5th, 2010?

Watching Alice in Wonderland in the theaters, that's where I'm going to be, goddamnit.

  • [info]accioslash: Thirty Days of Spam...Day 2 - Fic and art clearly aren't treated the same by fandom when it comes to unauthorized re-posting. Seriously, how long do you think I could actually keep up a site with a re-post of a popular fan fic with the notation "I don't know who wrote this, but if it's yours, let me know and I'll credit you." But I see that with art all the time. -

  • [info]ladydreamer: Easy Out - I've heard producers and writers often talking about how flattering it is that fans can get so angry at them about what they've done on a television show or a movie, and how it's an ultimate compliment in a way, since what they want to do is move the audience, to make them feel intense emotions. Any emotion is good, right? -

I just read an addme-type post where someone said one of their hobbies was "raping [their] computer". As English is not their first language, I sincerely hope it's a misunderstanding of sorts and not a deliberate attempt to use the word rape in "edgy", "hip", "funny", or "un-pc" ways. Which I disapprove of. *

The world and the people in it are pissing me off in lots of other ways, too, but I'm too tired to even list these. Maybe I should just go back to bed.

* Eta: I've explained my issues with the usage of the word in casual contexts in this IJ comment.

Moe shit but with 100 percent more KILLINZ

[info]jyuukoi
I am not easily disturbed, not by a long shot. I am a 4chan kid, meaning that I've probably seen enough shit that I do not run the danger of scarring for life anymore. My brain has been shot so many times that it's thrown itself into the swiss cheese subclass and genre.

However after watching 4 episodes of "Higurashi no Naku Koko ni", I sort of kind of don't want to turn out the light to go to bed. Granted, this is not BAD.. I actually loved it.. but damn if in four episodes it didn't cause me to start not once, not twice.. but eight times. I was suitably prepared by the helpful review that Anime World Order provided me but much like all reviews (and spoilers), you just have no FUCKING CLUE what you're in for.

The shit's bananas, but hell.. I approve.

Or, at least, having a basic post shell one can create and choose at leisure so they don't have to write the same sort of thing out each time.

I'm using my journal for my novel this year, so I had a format I was planning on using all the time, but having to type it out is a bit of a hassle, yanno?

(updated 10:28am: some fandoms don't need entire names)
(Updated 5:35am Nov 2: Sorry, me + muscle relaxants = x_x)

Couple of things to read before you post:

1) PLEASE spell out your fandom completely and characters correctly. There's a very good chance I won't know them.

2) PLEASE use proper capitalization and number notation (roman numerals for the most part).

Things that don't conform to the above will make me cranky, and you will likely end up with your prompts ignored.

I will stop taking prompts after I wake up Wednesday November 4th, which is usually 5:30am-ish EDT. Then they'll be sorted and posted by the other co-mod for you to write on.

Thanks!

[info]porn_battle
Starting November 1st, the next round of Porn Battles will start. Once again we will ask for your prompts to be thrown out there for smutty minds to snap up and churn out porny gems for everyone's enjoyment.

SO start writing those prompts out, find a few from previous battles that you want to see written and throw them up.

Remember, all prompts in the top comment slot so they'll be found. If you think of some after you've posted, then post again. There's nothing that says you can only post once. In fact, we'll love you more if you post more.

Good News, Everyone (I hope)

[info]das_dingsi
*uses icon with cautious optimism*

I just got a call from my temp agency (on the answering machine) where they ask me to call back. It's very likely because they have a job for me, and also very likely it's the awesome job again that I had one year ago, because it's cyclical -- in Winter they start ordering busloads of temp workers, in Summer they send them home again. Which is, of course, not as good as a fixed job. But it's better than nothing and like I said, I really liked it.

I haven't called them back yet to confirm. I'm too anxious to deal with it right now, I have two appointments this afternoon and it would also mean I have to change, or downright scratch, some paperwork that I actually wanted to send out today. For example, I attempt getting legal aid to cover the costs for my name change, and this could make it harder. But I don't want to think about it just today, so I'm going to call them tomorrow morning.

Completely unrelated, I want to get [info]fandomdirectory running again. If I haven't added any new entries until Sunday evening, give me angry looks and sternly tell me I need more discipline. You can even threaten to sic the Corinthian after me.

Well gee, after searching forever for the download for Nerina Pallot's new CD, The Graduate, I finally found it. Of course I have to wait until tomorrow to listen to it (since it's downloading) but hey, Nerina Pallot is one of my favorite female vocalists so I think that good things may come to those who wait, amirite?

NO NEW FANDOM THINGS TO REPORT, I AM SUFFERING A DROUGHT (been reading all of those Jo Beverly books which is probably why.) Though Klaus Van dem Eberbach has been having many a peverted thought involving a certain thief and whips and chains, before that it was Firion with impassioned Cloud-secks. (I have realized that there is always -something- having sex in my mind, and I don't know how I feel about that..)

I am also on an icon drought as well. >.>

ALSO.. going to the Bath and Body Works in South Williamson on thursday (I think.) Gonna get an early start so that we can get home and get ready for community trick or treating, but really I WANTS some Exotic Coconut. Also I found that some members of the Paranormal Society for the area works in the Deli section of Walmart. I am intriqued.

Found an easier way to get to South Williamson, completely bypassing the pikeville walmart intersection.. it involves winding mountain roads WHICH I LOVE. I probably won't like driving it in the rain but on a clear night/morning, that road is REALLY fun.
